History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine

Department for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine

What does the subject “History, Theory, and Ethics of Medicine” entail? “History, Theory, and Ethics of Medicine (GTE)” is an interdisciplinary subject according to the ÄAppO. It is intended to be taught alongside clinical training (usually from the 1st to the 6th clinical semester). The subject GTE has since been taught at all medical faculties in Germany. The corresponding courses are offered and supervised in Göttingen by the Department of Ethics and History of Medicine. The courses are based on the module structure of the clinical study section. In small groups and seminars, students are expected to work on ethical and historical issues relating to medicine. Under the guidance of the lecturers, they also gain insights into the current state of research in medical history and medical ethics. The course material is prepared in accompanying lectures. The aim of the course is to

  • sensitize students to the historical, philosophical, and ethical dimensions of medical practice,
  • to provide insight into the historical origins of questions and problems in modern medicine using individual examples,
  • to train practical skills in dealing with ethical conflicts in medicine,
  • and to spark interest in further study of the history, theory, and ethics of medicine.

Semester dates and general conditions for the written paper can be found at StudIP.
